Nadine Gawlitta started her PhD in April 2018 with the aim of characterizing aerosols from allergy-protective and allergy-adjuvant environments. Her project is a close cooperation between the Institute for Asthma and Allergy Prevention (IAP, Head: Prof. Erika von Mutius, MD, MSc) and the Cooperation Group CMA. In her work, she is characterizing the chemical composition of aerosols originating from environmental and anthropogenic sources and their possible allergenic traits. She is mainly using two-dimensional Gas Chromatography-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (GC×GC-TOFMS) for comprehensive chemical characterization of particle-bound Semi-Volatile Organic Compounds (SVOCs). For the biological evaluation of these aerosols, she is working in close cooperation with Elias Zimmermann, who is responsible for gene expression analysis after in vitro cell exposures by aerosols of distinct origin.
