Helmholtz Clinical AI Consultants

Mission

Medical AI research is growing at an unprecedented pace, with new ideas and algorithms emerging every day. Yet, only a small fraction of these innovations ever reaches real clinical environments, and even fewer prove their value in prospective trials. Our mission is to bridge thegap between cutting-edge AI research and everyday clinical practice. We help transform ideas into solutions that can truly make a difference in patient care.

Mission

Medical AI research is growing at an unprecedented pace, with new ideas and algorithms emerging every day. Yet, only a small fraction of these innovations ever reaches real clinical environments, and even fewer prove their value in prospective trials. Our mission is to bridge the gap between cutting-edge AI research and everyday clinical practice. We help transform ideas into solutions that can truly make a difference in patient care.

Who we are

As an interdisciplinary team combining expertise in medicine, artificial intelligence, and ethics from both academia and industry, our work is supported by a strong scientific network within the Helmholtz community and beyond. We collaborate with the Helmholtz AI Consultant Team, which brings more than seven years of experience in scientific AI consulting in health research.

What we offer

We support medical professionals throughout the entire lifecycle of AI research projects—from early ideation to execution and real-world clinical deployment. By combining consulting experience with strong research networks, we help transform promising concepts into prospective trials designed to evaluate AI under real clinical conditions. Our approach is practical, collaborative, and focused on achieving sustained clinical impact.

How we work

From Bedside to Bytes – and back

Great clinical innovations often start at the bedside. Clinicians experience everyday challenges firsthand and frequently have clear ideas about how processes, diagnostics, or treatments could be improved. However, turning these ideas into functional AI solutions requires time, technical expertise, and structured development. Our goal is to work alongside clinicians and transform real clinical needs into practical AI applications which hold their promises at the bedside.

Bedside ideation

As a clinician, you are closest to real-world problems and understand where current systems fall short. Many healthcare professionals already have concrete ideas for improvement, but lack the time or technical resources to explore them further. Even the development of a simple prototype requires extensive expertise in data science, software development, and algorithmic validation. We believe that the best ideas start with clinicians, and we are here to help turn them into reality.

Project review

If you have an idea, you can easily share it with us through our online submission form. Our team will evaluate its feasibility and alignment with our capabilities and resources. When a project shows strong potential, we initiate a collaborative AI development workflow together with you. Even if we cannot pursue the project directly, we provide constructive feedback and guidance on possible next steps. Our service is free for clinicians.

Realization

Once a project begins, we follow a structured workflow that moves from concept to clinical evaluation. Together with you, we define the project scope, explore data and technical feasibility, and develop an AI model. Throughout the process, we ensure scientifically sound validation, so the model performs reliably and safely. Our goal is prospective evaluation with real clinical data - and from there, the possibilities range from scientific publications to open-source tools and real clinical testing.

If you have an idea for a clinical AI-driven project, we are eager to hear from you.
