Academic career and research areas
Gabi performed her PhD thesis in Santiago, Chile, investigating biochemical adaptations of Chilean tree species that live in extreme environments like the Atacama Desert.
In her postdoctoral work she focused on humans and infection research. Gabi led a small laboratory at the gynecology department of the Ludwig Maximillian’s University Hospital that focused on vaginal infections. From there she went to the Biotech Start Up Cytoguide in Aarhus, Denmark, to work on the development of antibody-conjugated drugs for rheuma therapy. Back to Munich, Gabi joined the Institute of Epidemiology at Helmholtz Munich in 2012 as project manager for the German Center for Infectious Diseases (DZIF). She started to build up the biobank team, which she now heads. The team is involved in national and European projects in the field of biobanking, e.g the German Center for Infectious Diseases, the German Center for Cardiovascular Diseases (DZHK), the Network University Medicine (NUM) and the German Biobank Alliance (GBA).
At Helmholtz Munich the team is in charge of the KORA biobank at the Institute of Epidemiology which is a major resource for researchers working in the fields of prevention, diagnosis and therapy of complex diseases and collects biosamples since more than 30 years. Gabi’s team also runs the Core Facility Biobank that offers services around biobanking to all institutes at Helmholtz Munich and collaboration partners.
Gabi is active member of the MIABIS working groups since 2014 that aim at introducing and maintaining semantic standards for biobanks. Since 2018 she is the biobanking representative in the board of the DZIF transplantation cohort and since 2021 part of the steering committee of the German Biobank Alliance.
