On November 25, 2024, Helmholtz Munich hosted an inspiring evening at the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk in Munich. The event, titled "Fit for the Future – How can AI revolutionize Health and Medicine?", brought together experts including Dr. Carsten Marr (Helmholtz Munich), Dr. Peter Schardt (Siemens Healthineers), and Dr. Rainer Hutka (Bavarian Ministry of Health and Care) to explore the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare and medicine.

AI: The Key to the Future of Medicine

Dr. Carsten Marr, Director of the Institute of AI for Health at Helmholtz Munich, highlighted the potential of AI research: "Today, we can analyze massive datasets at the single-cell level, supporting diagnostics and offering insights into disease mechanisms that can inspire new therapeutic approaches."

From an industry perspective, Dr. Peter Schardt, CTO at Siemens Healthineers, shared groundbreaking advancements: "In cancer radiotherapy, doctors may soon use digital twins to predict how a patient will respond to treatment and tailor the radiation plan accordingly. Our research has already demonstrated that this is technically feasible."

Dr. Rainer Hutka emphasized Bavaria’s leadership in AI innovation, presenting current initiatives aimed at advancing AI applications in medicine.

Interactive Discussions and Visions for the Future

The evening’s panel discussion ventured into the future of healthcare: a digital, interconnected, system with integrated AI technology may enabe personalized disease prediction and prevention measures that could delay or even prevent illness. The conversation also addressed ethical and societal challenges, and audience questions about algorithm transparency sparking lively and forward-thinking discussions.

Collaboration and Innovation at the Forefront

The partnership between Helmholtz Munich and BERGSON Kunstkraftwerk fosters collaboration among science, industry, politics, and the public. This event underscored Helmholtz Munich’s mission to to not only pioneer scientific breakthroughs in the lab, but also to engage with society, making these innovations accessible and relevant to everyday life. The cooperation between Helmholtz Munich and the Bergson Kunstkraftwerk fostered meaningful exchanges
