Cell Sorting

CF-FLOW at Helmholtz Munich currently operates two cell sorters:

We offer to sort on 4 nozzle sizes depending on your experimental needs (70 mm, 85 mm, 100 mm, 130 mm). Bulk sorting is possible into a number of tube types (e.g.PCR tubes, 1,5/2 ml Eppendorf, 5 ml FACS tubes, 15 ml conicals) and plate sorts are possible on any plate from 6 well to 384 well format as well as onto glass slides.

Cell sorting as an operator-run service is bookable by all registered users. A sort request form must be completed and submitted with each booking request in iLab so we can be best prepared for your run. All sort requests are reviewed by CF-FLOW staff before final confirmation.

Please consult with CF-FLOW if you are unsure about best practice, length of time etc.

First time users must request a consultation meeting with CF-FLOW via iLab. We recommend to discuss all new sort protocols in advance. CF-FLOW follows the general Terms of use for Helmholtz Munich Core facilities, additional rules for the use of CF-FLOW will be discussed prior to first use of our services. Please note that formalities are required in advance for working with certain samples such as primary human samples and genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Self-service sort option

Our BD FACS ARIA III sorter can be operated by select and advanced cytometry users with an ongoing and regular need for cell sorting.
Pre-requisites for obtaining approval for self-sorting by the head of CF-FLOW are:

  1. Certificate of an official BD ARIA operator training course or
  2. Demonstrable prior self-sorting experience and skill (at least 12 month of regular self-sorting and contact to a reference in the relevant lab)
  3. Demonstration of safe independent and complete operation of all steps of a sort from instrument start up to shut down to the Head of CF-FLOW
  4. Adherence to CF-FLOW laboratory rules.

Any user wishing to obtain self-sorting privileges must book at least 3 assisted sessions with CF-FLOW staff in attendance during regular business hours when instrument setup, sorting and shutdown are done under staff supervision. Self-sorting requests in iLab must be reviewed and approved by CF-FLOW staff. During normal business hours operator run service sorts will have priority over self-sorting requests.

It is at the discretion of the head of CF-FLOW to grant self-sorting rights depending on skills demonstrated and only those with approval will obtain booking rights on BD ARIA III. Disregard of our rules, sorting for other any user or leaving the instrument in an unfit state for the next sort will lead to immediate termination of all self-sorting privileges.
