Analyzing data with repeated measurements or clusters
Mixed Models
Course description
“Mixed Models” are essential for analyzing datasets with repeated measurements or grouped data, where classical statistical approaches are inappropriate. This course starts with the limitations of standard linear models and then introduces the theory and application of Mixed Models. We will cover random intercept and random slope models in detail, with a focus on practical implementation in R.
Target Audience
Researchers who work with data involving repeated measurements, longitudinal studies, or other grouped/clustered structures.
Topics
- Limitations of Linear Regression:
- Review of the assumptions of linear regression.
- Why mixed models are necessary for analyzing data with repeated or grouped structures.
- Different Model Types:
- Conceptual basis of how mixed models account for data dependencies.
- Random Intercept Models to account for baseline variability between groups.
- Random Slope Models to account for variability in trends between groups.
- Nested Models to account for multiple sources of grouping.
- Model evaluation:
- Model diagnostics and model comparison.
- Communicating mixed-model results in research contexts.
Methods
The course blends theoretical lessons on mixed models with hands-on examples in R. You will learn how to apply these models and interpret their output using best-practice solutions.
Learning Goals
At the end of this course, you will be able to:
- Understand when and why standard regression is not suitable.
- Describe mixed model concepts.
- Differentiate between random intercept and random slope models and identify their appropriate uses.
- Fit and interpret mixed models.
- Critically evaluate and report model results.
Prerequisites
Programming skills in R, e.g. course Introduction to R and knowledge of regression models, e.g. course Introduction to Statistics.
