diabinfo in Dialogue: Obesity and Diabetes – Evolving Approaches to Prevention and Treatment

The medical treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes is currently undergoing a significant transformation. Innovative drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide – often referred to as "weight-loss injections" – mimic the action of specific gut hormones and precisely target metabolic processes. These medications can lead to substantial weight loss and help reduce the risk of associated complications. Originally developed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, they are now increasingly being used to treat obesity as well.

However, the use of these modern therapies also raises important questions: Who stands to benefit from the treatment? How is it administered in practice? Who covers the cost? And what do we know about their efficacy, potential side effects, and long-term impact?

These questions were at the heart of the fifth edition of the online event “diabinfo im Dialog”, held on July 8, 2025, which brought together current research insights and real-world clinical experiences for discussion.
