Awards & Grants Diabetes

This year, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Matthias H. Tschöp, CEO of Helmholtz Munich, and Prof. Dr. Stefanie Dehnen, a chemist at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), have been awarded the prestigious Hector Science Prize, each receiving €150,000.

The award ceremony took place at the "Europäischer Hof" hotel in Heidelberg, where the foundation's board and previous recipients convened. The foundation's founder, Dr. h.c. Hans-Werner Hector, welcomed the new laureates into the group of now 32 “Hector Fellows,” who are committed to advancing interdisciplinary top-tier research in Germany.

Laudators Prof. Dr. A. Stephen K. Hashmi and Prof. Dr. Ralf Bartenschlager (both from Heidelberg University) praised the laureates for the excellence of their research and their passion for exploring innovative paths. They noted that Tschöp and Dehnen will significantly enrich the "Hector Fellow Academy," which supports promising young researchers in Germany.

Prof. Matthias H. Tschöp is recognized as a pioneer in metabolic disease research. His groundbreaking work has profoundly enhanced the understanding of obesity, diabetes, and related metabolic disorders, paving the way for innovative medical treatments and personalized prevention strategies.

He said: "I am particularly honored to receive the Hector Science Prize, as it not only acknowledges scientific achievements but also highlights the crucial role of nurturing young talent and advancing education. The scientific potential of future generations is key to progress—both in research and in shaping society as a whole. At Helmholtz Munich, we are deeply committed to fostering an inspiring environment where early-career scientists from around the world can explore bold ideas and transform them into groundbreaking innovations."

The H. W. & J. Hector Foundation was established in 1995 by Josephine and Dr. h.c. Hans-Werner Hector in Weinheim, Germany. In 2008, the "Hector Foundation II" was launched as an extension. For more information, visit: www.hector-stiftung.com.
