About the CO-FU Study

What is the aim of this study?

Obesity can be a lifelong burden that often begins in childhood. In adulthood, many of those affected develop obesity-associated diseases such as diabetes, fatty liver disease or cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study is to investigate the transition of children with obesity into adulthood from a comprehensive biological, (epi-) genetic, ecological and socio-psychological perspective. Our research focuses on risk and protective factors in childhood, which may enable us to predict the course of the disease in adulthood.

Who can participate?

The following people can participate:

  • Men and women aged 18 and over who were treated for obesity at Leipzig University Hospital during childhood
  • Men and women aged 18 and over who have already taken part in other studies at Leipzig University or Leipzig University Hospital as children or adolescents

The following examinations are carried out:

  • Determination of body measurements (weight, height, BMI, etc.)
  • Measurement of body composition (bioimpedance analysis)
  • Blood tests
  • Oral glucose tolerance test

  • Fibroscan ultrasound examination of the liver (elastography)
  • 24-hour blood pressure measurement
  • Dental examination/saliva sample collection
  • Recording of your illnesses and questionnaires on your lifestyle, living environment and well-being
