About the HHS Study

What is the aim of this study?

Much is not yet known about the effects of the hormones oestrogen and testosterone on eating behavior, metabolism, sensory function and the cardiovascular system. In this study, the effects of gender reassignment hormone therapy are being investigated in a group of transgender people at six different points in time. The same investigations are also being carried out in parallel in a matched control group that is not receiving hormone therapy.

Who can take part in the study?

  • Men and women aged 18 to 69 years
  • For the intervention group: gender-incongruent/transsexual individuals who are about to start gender reassignment hormone therapy

The following exclusion criteria apply:

  • Serious illnesses such as cancer, heart, kidney or liver disease, severe depression, etc.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Addictions such as alcohol or drug addiction
  • Participation in other studies in which medication is being investigated or other interventions are taking place

What happens in the study?

The following examinations are carried out:

  • Determination of body measurements (e.g. weight, height) and vital parameters (e.g. blood pressure, temperature)
  • Blood sampling
  • Measurement of body composition (bioimpedance analysis)
  • Measurement of energy metabolism with indirect calorimetry
  • Measurement of taste sensation
  • Measurement of temperature sensitivity
  • Examination of the cervical and abdominal arteries with ultrasound and measurement of hand blood flow
  • Measurement of hunger sensation before and after a test meal
  • Psychological questionnaires

All details about the examinations will be explained to you in a detailed consultation before the start of the study.

How much time is required and how is the remuneration?

A total of six examinations are carried out at different times. After the first measurement day, the identical measurements are repeated after 3, 6 and 12 months and after 2 and 5 years. One examination day lasts approx. 7 hours. In addition to a comprehensive medical check-up, you will receive an expense allowance of 50€ per examination day.
