Erika von Mutius and Ulrike Protzer Elected to Bavarian Academy
At its most recent plenary session, the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities (BAdW) elected 14 distinguished scholars as new members. Among them are two Helmholtz Munich researchers: Prof. Erika von Mutius and Prof. Ulrike Protzer.
Erika von Mutius is Director of the Institute of Asthma and Allergy Prevention at Helmholtz Munich and Professor of Pediatric Allergology at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich. Her work on the development and prevention of asthma and allergies in children has earned her global recognition. She has played a pivotal role in advancing the understanding of how environmental influences and genetic predisposition interact in the onset of pediatric respiratory diseases.
Ulrike Protzer, Director of the Institute of Virology at Helmholtz Munich and Professor of Virology at the Technical University of Munich, is one of Germany’s leading virologists. Her research focuses on chronic viral infections, particularly chronic hepatitis B. Her interdisciplinary approach combines molecular virology with clinical research and immunology. She is a leading scientific voice in advising policymakers on virology and public health issues.
With the election of Erika von Mutius and Ulrike Protzer, the Academy not only recognizes two outstanding scientists but also underscores the critical societal relevance of cutting-edge medical research. In total, 14 full members and one corresponding member were newly admitted to the BAdW, representing a wide spectrum of disciplines – from laser physics and computational linguistics to organic chemistry and public law.
Election to the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities is one of the highest academic honors in Bavaria. Only individuals whose research has made a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge in their field are eligible. Self-nomination is not permitted; candidates must be nominated by existing members.
Following the most recent election, the Academy now comprises 212 full members, 103 corresponding members, 23 extraordinary members, and two honorary members.
