IRBMMy mission is to identify basic patho mechanisms of organ fibrosis. I investigate this in various in vitro high throughput assays, ex vivo tissue explants or preclinical in vivo models. With the better mechanistic understanding of biology, the translatability into potential therapeutic applications is always in focus for me.
One of my research focuses is on organ surfaces, which represent a unique niche for diverse populations of cells and also elements of extra cellular matrix (ECM). These cells and ECM are responsible for various pathologies such as whole organ adhesions after abdominal surgery.
Another field that interests me is the movement of ECM in organ lesions. I am interested in which matrix elements are transported, how they are processed and by whom, and what the effects of the transported matrix are in the wounds. Exciting questions here are how the ECM influences the fate of the embedded cells and thus decides programs between pathology or regeneration.
