Career

Stephanie E. Combs is a leading expert in the field of radiation oncology. Her central expertise is high precision radiation therapy (stereotaxy, IMRT/IGRT/ART, protons/heavy ions), radiobiology, and combination therapies with radiation. Her scientific work includes therapy optimization of brain and skull base tumors, biomarkers in radiooncology, pediatric oncology, gastrointestinal oncology, uro-oncology, gynecologic oncology, radiochemotherapy and radioimmunotherapy.

Stephanie E. Combs works with her interdisciplinary team on different platforms. She herself implements this networking out of conviction: She is director of the Institute of Radiation Medicine at Helmholtz Munich and director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), Chair of the Senate at TUM and of several national and EU-wide research networks.

The Institute of Radiation Medicine works closely with the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University Hospital "rechts der Isar" and physicians throughout Germany and Europe, and is thus able to explore findings discovered in the laboratory in patients and bring new therapeutic approaches to the clinic.

Academic Pathway

Prof. Dr. Combs studied medicine at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, with intermittent studies abroad at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, VA, USA and the University of Texas (UTHSCSA), San Antonio, TX, USA. After receiving her doctorate in 2003, she worked as a research associate in Heidelberg. In 2009, she finished her Habilitation. In 2011, she was working as a senior physician at the Department of Radiation Oncology at Heidelberg University Hospital, Germany. Since 2014, Prof. Combs is the director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at TUM, Munich, Germany and since 2015 she is the director of the Institute of Radiation Medicine at Helmholtz Munich. In 2015, she initiated a Masters Course, Master of Radiation Biology. In 2019, Prof. Combs became Chair of the Senate at TUM.
