Anthi Krontira Receives Klaus Tschira Boost Fund for Research on Brain Development

Awards & Grants, Stem Cells, ISF,

Dr. Anthi Krontira from the Institute of Stem Cell Research at Helmholtz Munich has been granted the Klaus Tschira Boost Fund. This funding program, supported by the German Scholars Organization and the Klaus Tschira Stiftung, aims to support early career scientists in advancing their research. Krontira will receive €102,000 over the next two years, starting April 1, 2025, to support her project on brain development.

Exploring Brain Cell Growth

Krontira’s research explores why the brain ceases to produce new cells as it matures. Specifically, she is investigating the mechanisms that signal the end of neuronal production in the cortex – the brain's outer layer – and whether it is possible to reverse or prolong this process. By uncovering these mechanisms, her work could pave the way for new treatments for brain disorders, including those caused by injury or disease.

Empowering Early-Career Scientists with Innovative Ideas

The Klaus Tschira Boost Fund is designed to support early-career scientists with innovative ideas that have the potential to make a significant impact. In addition to providing financial backing, the program helps researchers advance their careers, expand their networks, and collaborate across disciplines to develop new solutions to critical challenges.

“I am very grateful to receive this support,” says Krontira. “This funding will allow me to dive deeper into how the brain develops and how we can use this knowledge to fix it when things go wrong. With the support of the Klaus Tschira Boost Fund, I will have the opportunity to develop a proof of concept for a novel approach to regenerating brain cells lost during traumatic injuries or diseases.”
