Exhibition on Cell Identity at the Deutsches Museum

Events Stem Cells IES Molecular Targets and Therapeutics IFE

How do the many different cells in the human body emerge from a single stem cell – and what makes each one unique? The Epigenetics Community at Helmholtz Munich explores these questions in a special exhibition at the Deutsches Museum. From 14. to 16. November 2025, twelve doctoral researchers and postdocs will, for the fourth time, present an engaging format that brings science to life for everyone.

Three Perspectives on the Cell

The exhibition invites visitors to explore the topic in three stages. It begins with the fundamentals of cell identity and epigenetics. The second part showcases the extraordinary potential of stem cells: their ability to develop into a wide variety of cell types. With the help of advanced AI analyses, this process of differentiation becomes visible – and its applications in medicine come into focus. Finally, visitors will discover how lifestyle and environmental factors shape the function and identity of cells.

Interactive and for All Generations

In addition to posters, the exhibition offers interactive stations such as microscopes, games, and models. The program is designed for all age groups – with direct exchange between visitors and early-career researchers at its core.

Panel Discussion on AI and Ethics

A special highlight will be the panel discussion on 14 November after museum hours, focusing on Artificial Intelligence and Ethics in Biomedicine. Panelists include:
Prof. Carsten Marr (Helmholtz Munich)
• Prof. Jan Korbel (EMBL Heidelberg)
• Dr. Christina Berndt (Süddeutsche Zeitung)
• Dr. Theresa Willem (TU München)
• Moderation: Dr. Julia Serong (LMU München, MSCL)

The event is coordinated by Helmholtz Munich researchers Prof. Maria-Elena Torres-Padilla (Institute of Epigenetics and Stem Cells), Prof. Robert Schneider (Institute of Functional Epigenetics), and Prof. Aloys Schepers (EpiCrossBorders: Helmholtz–Edinburgh Research School for Epigenetics).
