Kanert Award for Allergy Research Goes to Dr. Matthias Reiger

Awards & Grants, Environmental Health, IEM,

As part of the 37th Allergy Colloquium at the Research Center Borstel, Dr. Matthias Reiger was awarded the Kanert Award for Allergy Research. The scientist received the recognition for a research project focused on the use of nanopore sequencing in atopic dermatitis research.

The German Kanert Foundation for Allergy Research aims to promote research in the field of allergic diseases and honors outstanding scientific projects that address the future of allergology.

The awarded project, "Nanopore Sequencing: Application Potential in Atopic Dermatitis Research", by Matthias Reiger, focuses on the skin microbiome and its potential for diagnostic and therapeutic use in atopic dermatitis. During the award ceremony, Reiger presented the project to an expert audience and the founding couple of the foundation.

The Kanert Award, endowed with €20,000, has been presented since the 1990s. It specifically supports newly planned projects that build on current scientific findings. Over the years, numerous research groups from the German-speaking scientific community have received the award for work on topics such as mast cell research, contact allergies, and anaphylaxis.

Twenty years ago, the award was also granted to Prof. Claudia Traidl-Hoffmann, who now heads the the Institute of Environmental Medicine at Helmholtz Munich.

"We are pleased to once again support innovative research projects this year that make a significant contribution to the field of allergy research," said Prof. Uta Jappe, member of the foundation’s board of trustees, during the award ceremony. She emphasized that “the submitted projects demonstrate the great dedication and creativity of researchers in this important field.”
