Robert Stein Awarded General DDG Project Funding for New Research Project on Diabetes Risk in Children and Adolescents
Dr. Robert Stein has been awarded one of this year's General Project Grants from the German Diabetes Association (DDG) in the amount of €15,000 for his project, entitled "Identification of Subtypes of Children and Adolescents at Risk of Diabetes Using Cluster Analyses and Their Relevance in Relation to the Occurrence of (Pre)Diabetes."
The aim of this project is to identify obesity and (pre)diabetes subtypes in children and adolescents, follow them into adulthood, uncover their respective (epi)genetic background, and test their clinical relevance regarding long-term disease progression and response to interventions. The data for the cluster analyses will be derived from the ‘Leipzig Childhood Obesity’ cohort and will be validated through internal and external collaborations.
Robert Stein is a paediatrician at Leipzig University Hospital, as well as a clinician scientist in Prof. Antje Körner's ‘Childhood Obesity’ group and a guest researcher at HI-MAG. His research interests lie in the fields of childhood obesity and its endocrinological and cardiovascular consequences. In clinical studies, he is investigating new drug treatment options for obesity and diabetes in children and adolescents.
The DDG provides general project funding every year for a number of research projects that are closely related to diabetology. The funding bodies are the DDG itself, the Dr. Buding Foundation and the German Diabetes Foundation.
