Visit by Martin Keller

“Together We Can Achieve Breakthroughs”: Helmholtz President Martin Keller visits Helmholtz Munich

Helmholtz Munich welcomed Prof. Martin Keller, President of the Helmholtz Association, as part of his tour of all 18 Helmholtz centers. The tour aims to strengthen dialogue across the Helmholtz network, enhance visibility for science in Germany, and provide first-hand insights into the strategic strengths of each center.

Helmholtz Munich’s Role in Health Innovation

During his visit, Martin Keller exchanged with Helmholtz Munich’s leadership on the center’s scientific priorities and its role within the Helmholtz Association. The discussions underscored Helmholtz Munich’s distinctive scientific profile and its contribution to the association’s mission of conducting strategic research across institutional and disciplinary boundaries. Combining expertise in metabolic health, artificial intelligence, stem cells, environmental health, molecular targets, biomedical engineering, and translational research, Helmholtz Munich tackles complex health challenges and develops innovative approaches for early risk detection, prevention, and personalized therapies.

“Helmholtz Munich is an outstanding example of what lies at the very core of the Helmholtz Association: it integrates research on how environmental and climate factors affect human health with cutting-edge work in artificial intelligence, bioengineering, and preventive medicine. By addressing major diseases that affect large parts of the population – such as allergies, diabetes, or obesity – these  cross-cutting research activities deliver real impact for society and are key to shaping the medicine of the future. Strong Public Private Partnerships play a pivotal role in this,” says Prof. Martin Keller, President of the Helmholtz Association.

“Helmholtz Munich brings together outstanding expertise across the entire spectrum of health research – from prevention to therapy,” adds Prof. Martin Hrabě de Angelis, Member and Spokesperson of the Executive Board (acting). “As part of the Helmholtz Association, we pursue a shared vision of strategic, interdisciplinary research that delivers tangible benefits for patients and society and helps shape the future of biomedical innovation. By collaborating closely across the network, we aim to strengthen Helmholtz’s collective impact, drive innovation, address major societal challenges, and ensure that research translates into practical applications.”

Supporting the Next Generation of Scientists

Keller also met with early-career researchers and rising talents at Helmholtz Munich, engaging in conversations about their work, career ambitions, and the opportunities and challenges of operating at the interface of basic science, applied research, and translational projects.

Visibility, Teamwork, and Impact

“Helmholtz is a community,” Keller said. “Together we can achieve breakthroughs beyond individual research areas that will have a tangible impact on people's lives.”
