Institute of Diabetes and Cancer (IDC)

The Institute of Diabetes and Cancer (IDC) is a member of the Helmholtz Diabetes Center (HDC) at the Helmholtz Center Munich and also a partner within the Joint Heidelberg-IDC Translational Diabetes Program. The Institute of Diabetes and Cancer is tightly integrated into the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) and the Collaborative Research Center SFB 1118 “Reactive metabolites and diabetic complications” at the University Medicine Heidelberg, Germany.

The IDC is investigating the molecular basis of severe metabolic disorders, including the Metabolic Syndrome and Type 2 Diabetes, and their roles in tumor initiation and progression.

Institute of Diabetes Research (IDF) / Diabetes Study Center

Chair of Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes at Technische Universität München

The Institute of Diabetes Research (IDF) researches the pathogenesis and prevention of type 1 diabetes and gestational diabetes. To this end, it investigates the molecular mechanisms leading to the development of the disease, in particular the interaction of environment, genes and immune system. The aim of this research is to identify markers for early diagnosis and to develop treatments for the prevention and cure of diabetes.
Clinical and cohort studies are coordinated and conducted in our Diabetes Study Center.

The primary research objective of the Institute of Diabetes Research and Metabolic Diseases (IDM) of Helmholtz Zentrum München at the University of Tübingen is the individualized prediction of diabetes risk, diabetes prevention and the personalized treatment of diabetes. The main research focus is on gene-environment interaction in type 2 diabetes.

The Institute of Diabetes and Obesity (IDO) studies the metabolic syndrome by means of systems biological and translational approaches, using cell-based systems, genetically modified mouse models and clinical intervention studies. The aim of this research is to discover new signaling pathways in order to develop innovative interdisciplinary approaches for the personalized prevention and treatment of obesity, diabetes and concomitant diseases.

- Research Unit NeuroBiology of Diabetes (NBD)

The Research Unit NeuroBiology of Diabetes is associated with the IDO, and aims to unravel the role of the central nervous system in the etiology of metabolic disease. Focus is directed towards understanding the impact of hypothalamic inflammation for the development of obesity and diabetes type 2. The NBD further assesses the role of epigenetic signaling as gene-environment interface for our adaptive metabolic control. Last, the NBD aims to gain insight into the underpinnings of leptin resistance, yoyo dieting, and our failure to stay lean.

The Institute of Diabetes and Regeneration Research (IDR) researches the biology and regeneration of the pancreas, especially the insulin-producing beta cells. The primary aim is to enable regenerative therapy approaches for the treatment of diabetes mellitus and thus to provide alternatives to traditional therapy approaches. The IDR seks to discover novel drugs that enhance beta cell differentiation and function and is working towards a beta cell replacement therapy.

Institute of Translational Stem Cell Research (ITS)

The objective of the Institute of Translational Stem Cell Research (ITS) is to develop a stem cell-based replacement therapy in type 1 diabetes. The scientists aim to develop safe approaches for up-scaled production of insulin-producing beta cells from human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs). An important milestone in the short term is the proper production of the cells following defined standards of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). The ITS works closely together with the University of Copenhagen.

Research Unit BioGeoChemistry and Analytics (BGC)

The independent Research Unit Analytical BioGeoChemistry (BGC) investigates molecular interactions of substances in Bio- and Geosystems. The development of high-resolution methods for the elucidation of organic structures, in conjunction with separation sciences and mathematical methods, allow a precise space and time-resolved analysis of complex sample matrices. The aim of this research is to achieve a better understanding of the microbial processes in ecosystems (microbioms) and to improve the determination of biomarkers, in model organisms as well as in patients.

The Institute of Biochemical Plant Pathology (BIOP) explores defense mechanisms, growth and fitness of plants in response to environmental cues, with a focus on molecular mechanisms that allow plants to respond to biotic and abiotic factors. The Research Unit Environmental Simulation (EUS) is a part of the Institute of Biochemical Plant Pathology. It pools infrastructure and expertise for researching the influence of the global climate change on growth, yield and health of crops and energy plants, as well as on biodiversity.  EUS offer environmental simulation at the highest level and state-of-the-art methods of eco physiology and mass spectroscopy. Its research focuses on the biosphere-atmosphere exchange of biogenic volatile organic compounds.

Cooperation Group Comprehensive Molecular Analytics (CMA)

Chair of Analytical Chemistryat Rostock University

The Helmholtz Zentrum München and the University of Rostock (Chair for Analytical Chemistry) jointly conduct research in the independent Comprehensive Molecular Analytics (CMA) Cooperation Group. The research focuses on the development and application of mass spectrometry-based analysis techniques in order to characterize complex molecular substance mixtures. New measurement technologies are developed and molecular profiles are created in the Joint Mass Spectrometry Centre (JMSC), particularly with a view to the analysis of aerosols and their effects on health.

The independent Research Unit Comparative Microbiome Analysis (COMI) investigates the structure and function of microbial communities in the soil and identifies abiotic and biotic parameters, which control abundance, diversity and activity of the corresponding microbiomes. The aim of this research is to make the genetic resources of the soil microflora better usable for a sustainable bio economy.

Institute of Epidemiology (EPI)

Director: Prof. Dr. Annette Peters

The Institute of Epidemiology (EPI) assesses genetic, environmental and lifestyle risk factors which jointly determine the occurrence of major chronic diseases. The focus is on the development and progression of metabolic, respiratory and allergic diseases, as well as heart diseases and mental health. The goal is to understand the molecular underpinning of disease better and to translate this knowledge into personalized approaches of prevention as well as polices to improve health. Research builds on the unique resources of the KORA cohort, the KORA myocardial infarction registry, and the KORA aerosol measurement station. Aging-related phenotypes have been added to the KORA research portfolio within the frame of the Research Consortium KORA-Age. Moreover, the institute makes use of the birth cohorts GINI and LISA. It plays a leading role in the planning and setting up of the German National Cohort and builds the NAKO biorepository.

- Research Unit Molecular Epidemiology (AME)

Head: Dr. Christian Gieger

The Research Unit Molecular Epidemiology (AME) in the Institute of Epidemiology analyses population-based chohorts and case studies for certain diseases, using genomics, epigenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and functional analyses. The aim of this research is to decipher the molecular mechanisms of complex diseases like type 2 diabetes or obesity. The unit administers the biological specimen repository of the Department of Epidemiology and stores the samples for national and international projects.

Independent Research Group Clinical Epidemiology (KEPI)

The Independent Research Group Clinical Epidemiology (KEPI) will establish a patient-oriented research programme in close clinical cooperation. The scientific interests refer to early detection and secondary prevention of chronic diseases (like metabolic diseases, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases) and their complications. Furthermore the group will focus on health care research based on patient cohorts and epidemiologic registries.

Chronic lung diseases are the research focus of the Institute of Lung Health and Immuity (LHI) and of the Comprehensive Pneumology Center (CPC). The aim of this research are novel approaches to diagnostics or therapy. To this end, scientists strive to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung fibrosis, lung cancer or asthma and complications following lung transplantation (bronchiolitis obliterans) and translate them into therapeutic approaches for patients.

The main focus of the independent Research Unit Plant Genome and Systems Biology (PGSB) is plant genome and systems-oriented bioinformatics. Research Unit Molecular Immunoregulation (AMIR)

The Reserarch Unit Molecular Immunoregulation (AMIR), headed up by Dr. Vigo Heissmeyer, is part of the Institute of Molecular Immunology. AMIR investigates the molecular programming of T-cell tolerance, inter alia at the level of posttranscriptional gene regulation. The aim of AMIR is to achieve a better understanding of the molecular programs of T-cells, which make a distinction between the body’s own structure and foreign structures possible. The research focus is on autoimmune diseases such as type 1 diabetes and Lupus erythematodes.

The Institute of Functional Epigenetics (IFE) is interested in how genes are packaged within the nucleus of a cell. The focus is on the so-called "histone proteins" on which the DNA strands are wound and that can determine whether a gene can be read or not. The Institute of Virology (VIRO) investigates viruses that can cause chronic infections life-threatening diseases in humans. Research Unit Apoptosis in Hematopoetic Stem Cells (AHS)

The vision of the Research Unit Apoptosis in Hematopoietic Stem Cells (AHS) is to develop novel anti-cancer treatment strategies that eliminate leukemia stem cells. We aim at discovering mechanisms that allow inducing apoptosis in tumor stem cells, in order to overcome treatment resistance and prevent disease relapse. Using genetically modified patients´ leukemia cells growing in mice, we search for cellular structures which represent effective novel targets for therapy.

Research within the Institute of Epigenetics and Stem Cells (IES) aims at determining how stem cells originate in vivo and at establishing epigenetic principles behind changes in cellular plasticity and genome reprogramming. They study how the transitions in cell potency and cell fate are regulated by chromatin-mediated processes using a variety of approaches including quantitative imaging, modeling, functional genomics and cell biology. Understanding the molecular mechanisms behind the maintenance and manipulation of cellular plasticity will have strong implications in regenerative medicine and disease, and will help in deciphering human reproduction and infertility.

The Institute of Stem Cell Research (ISF) investigates the basic molecular and cellular mechanisms for stem cell maintenance and stem cell differentiation. On this basis, the ISF develops approaches for the replacement of degenerated cell types, either by activation of endogenous stem cells or by re-programming other endogenous cells for repair. The aim of these approaches is the self-renewal of injured or degenerated tissue.

The independent Research Unit Sensory Biology and Organogenesis (SBO) investigates cellular, molecular and physiological reactions to mechanical stimuli and sensory disorders, using the zebra fish as a model system. The main focus is on the physical and mechanical properties of the tissue. The aim of this research is to investigate the mechanisms controlling the development, self-regulation and regeneration of the sensory system as well as the evolution of the sensory organs for the perception of the environment.

Research Unit Analytical Pathology (AAP)

The independent Research  Unit Analytical Pathology Department (AAP) carries out scientific development, as a complement to research units with a clinical and fundamental orientation, of translational research on diseases that occur in tissue. AAP is involved in the translation of (for example) in-vitro models or animal models to application in humans. AAP thus links basic research with diagnostic application, subsequently translating the findings of experimental and molecular pathology into procedures for the classification of diseases and predictive diagnostics dealing with tissue.

The research of ISBM focuses on three synergistic areas: (1) biomolecular engineering of sensors and actuators, (2) genetic and cellular engineering of model systems, and (3) multiscale interrogation of cell-circuit function.

A fundamental challenge in modern science is to understand how the brain functions in health and disease. The Institute for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (ITERM) is interested in elucidating the mechanisms leading to neurological diseases and ageing, in particular stroke and dementia. To this end, it develops and implements 3D imaging technologies to be able to generate the highest resolution views of intact rodent organs and bodies. It developed DISCO line of organic solvent tissues clearing methods, which have been a great utility for scientists from diverse bio-medical research fields.

Chair of Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems at Technische Universität München

The Institute of Computational Biology (ICB) develops and applies methods for the model-based description of biological systems, using a data-driven approach by integrating information on multiple scales ranging from single-cell time series to large-scale omics. The Institute of Machine Learning in Biomedical Imaging (IML) focuses on research to leverage machine learning for the grand challenges in biomedical imaging in areas of unmet clinical need. Its goal is to fundamentally transform the use of imaging for diagnostics and prognostics. Novel and affordable solutions should empower clinics to make more accurate, fast and reliable decisions for early detection, treatment planning and improved patient outcome.

At the Institute of Neurogenomics (ING), the focus is on the genetic basis of neurological diseases. The research concentrates on the underlying genomic architecture and the molecular mechanisms of complex genetic as well as rare neurological diseases. The objective is to investigate the genetic basis of neurological diseases in order to improve diagnosis and ultimately make it possible to offer patients tailored, personalized treatment.
