Maintaining or improving soil quality while reducing nutrient losses via leaching and greenhouse gas emissions is a major aim of sustainable agriculture.  Therefore, optimization in fertilizer application as well as the establishment of alternative fertilizers based on renewable materials is needed. For the efficient nutrient storage and mobilisation microorganisms are the key players for the success of alternative approaches.
