Julia Esser-von Bieren Receives Henning Løwenstein Research Award 2021

For her outstanding research in the field of immunological mechanisms of allergic inflammation, Julia Esser-von Bieren from the Institute of Allergy Research received this year's Henning Løwenstein Research Award. The prize is awarded every two years to a early career scientist who has made a particularly outstanding contribution to the field of allergology. The research award is endowed with 20,000 euros.

The award was presented and handed out on November 19 by Henning Løwenstein and Stephen Durham - both of whom have themselves made pioneering contributions to the development of allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) - at ALK headquarters in Hørsholm, Denmark.

Julia's research is focussed on the mechanisms that drive and regulate type 2 inflammation, e.g. in asthma. Recently, her team could identify mechanisms that drive the inflammatory reprogramming of macrophages in allergic asthma and NSAID-exacerbated respiratory disease.

In addition, the group could characterize and purify an anti-inflammatory helminth protein that regulates lipid mediator pathways and thus allergic airway inflammation:
