ESCAPE - Effects of long-term exposure to air pollution on health in European cohorts

40 monitoring sites were selected to perform spatially resolved measurements of PM10, PM2.5, the soot content of PM2.5 and NOx in the region of Munich and Augsburg. Measurements were conducted in three periods of two weeks in the year 2009. At one additional background site, PM and NOx were measured continuously using the same instruments during the monitoring campaign so that the discontinuous site specific measurements could be adjusted to the true long term average for the observation period.

PM10 and PM2.5 were measured with Harvard impactors according to SOPs used in the previous study TRAPCA. NOx were measured with Ogawa badges.

In parallel, geographic information system (GIS) variables have been collected (e.g., information on land use, address density / number of inhabitants). Finally, stochastic modeling techniques involve developing statistical associations between potential ‘predictor variables’ (e.g. data on emission sources, topography, land cover, traffic) and measured pollutant concentrations was used for predicting concentrations at unsampled sites.
