Research Group "Mental Health Epidemiology"

The primary mission of the research unit 'Mental Health Epidemiology' in EPI is to contribute psychosocial and psychosomatic health perspectives to the major research lines of the EPI Institute. Our research projects are mainly based on data from the Monitoring of Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular Diseases (MONICA)/Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg (KORA) Augsburg studies conducted since 1984 in the area of Augsburg, Germany.

The data sets of the MONICA/KORA surveys offer the unique opportunity to promote the scientific understanding of the inter-relationship among social, behavioural and biological factors in heart disease from a population based epidemiological research perspective. The interdisciplinary layout of the KORA research platform allows to link recent state-of-the-art-developments in somatic medicine to psycho-behavioural concepts.

More recently, the scope of our scientific endeavours has been substantially expanded: we undertake research especially elucidating mental health issues in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Furthermore, the unit undertakes mental health research within the frame work of clinical epidemiology and clinical research with emphasize on the aging society. Other focus of interests are psychocardiology, severe mental health outcomes, with a special focus on suicide epidemiology (general population and railway suicides) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
