HDC-facility: Specialized Metabolic Phenotyping [SMP]

Diabetes Mellitus has reached epidemic proportions worldwide. In vivo models are critical for understanding the pathophysiology, the reasons of increasing prevalence and elucidating treatment strategies. Mouse models provide an important tool for study of the pathogenesis, prevention, and treatment of metabolic diseases including diabetes. The HDC-facility ``Specialized Metabolic Phenotyping [SMP]´´ provides a variety of services to investigate glucose homeostasis, insulin sensitivity, the secretory capacity of pancreatic ß-cells and other physiological parameters in mouse models. We offer optimal methods, standardized procedures and state-of-the-art technologies, which not only allow investigators to fully exploit mouse models in dissecting the pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications but also improve animal welfare.


Offered services:

Hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp with [3-3H] glucose and [14C] deoxyglucose 

This test determines whole body insulin action, the ability of insulin to suppress endogenous glucose production and the rates of tissues specific glucose uptake.

Hyperglycemic clamp

This test determines the ability of the pancreas to respond to an acute increase in glucose levels by monitoring the time course of insulin and c-peptide concentration.

Hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemic clamp

This test is a variant of the glucose clamp technique designed to assess counterregulatory hormone responses under standardized conditions of experimental hypoglycemia.

Carotid arterial or/and jugular vein catheterization

This procedure allows investigators having access for blood withdrawal or/and infusion of compounds.

DSI implantable telemetry (collect wireless chronic, stress-free data)

This enables researchers to continuously collect wireless chronic, stress-free physiologic parameters from conscious, freely moving mice (e.g. blood glucose; blood pressure;…).
