An awarded PhD success story at IBMI

Markus Seeger defended his PhD Thesis with the title "Hybrid microscopy: A novel microscope integrating advanced optical and optoacoustic modalities for multi-modal examinations of biological specimens" under the supervision of Prof. Vasilis Ntziachristos at the Chair of Biological Imaging, TUM, and the Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging, Helmholtz Zentrum München in April 2020. Markus describes the development and optimization of the HyMPSOM microscope, which thanks to his massive technological improvements to the device resulted in such impressive imaging capabilities that it became an integral part of numerous projects within the lab and with external collaborators. Markus received several prestigious awards for his outstanding Thesis and high-impact publications.

Nominated by the TUM Graduate School, Markus received the »Dimitris N. Chorafas Prize«, an international award for outstanding PhD Theses in selected fields in the engineering sciences, medicine and the natural sciences. In addition, he was given the »PhD Award for excellent PhD Thesis« by the European Society for Molecular Imaging (ESMI). He further received our institutional »IBMI/CBI Award for Scientific Excellence« during our annual scientific retreat in December 2020. Finally, Markus’ scientific achievements paved the way for him to be awarded with the »Thomas F. Deutsch Fellowship in Biomedical Optics« given by the Optical Society (OSA) foundation. This one-year multidisciplinary fellowship specifically fosters interactions between researchers from diverse fields of science and medicine and supports post-doctoral investigators pursuing training in either basic or clinical research. It is offered in partnership with the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Wellman Center for Photomedicine. Markus will continue to develop novel photoacoustic microscopy technology for structural, functional, molecular, and metabolic interrogations working together with Seemantini Nadkarni and Brett Bouma, Wellman Center for Photomedicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, USA.

Everyone at IBMI wishes you all the best for your future career in Boston, Markus, and we are excited to read many more of your outstanding publications!
