ICB successful in second round of Helmholtz pilot projects on information & data science

Artificial Intelligence and the mining of big data offer enormous potential in the field of medicine, healthcare and science. Helmholtz is now funding a second round of pioneering research projects. Four strategically relevant research projects will receive funding of up to four million euros each, where one half of this investment is granted by the Helmholtz Association, and the other half is contributed by the participating institutions. Two out of the four selected projects are co-coordinated by researchers from ICB:

The project “Uncertainty Quantification – From Data to Reliable Knowledge” tackles uncertainty in data, analyses and predictions from diverse areas such as climate change, energy supply and RNA biology. Exploiting commonalities in data science techniques, the project connects applied researchers with Helmholtz data science experts, as well as external university partners from mathematics and econometrics. The project is jointly coordinated by Prof. Dr. Christiane Fuchs (HMGU/ICB) and Prof. Dr. Martin Frank (KIT).

The project “Ptychography 4.0” is led by PD Dr. Wolfgang zu Castell (HMGU/ICB) and Prof. Dr. Christian Schroer (DESY). Ptychography is a computational method to use correlated measurements in order to reconstruct an object from diffraction images. The project embraces the challenge to push ptychography towards routine operation with various radiation sources through a combination of optical expertise and data sciences techniques.

 The newly funded projects mark a further success of ICB within the Helmholtz Incubator Information & Data Science after the previously acquired pilot project “Sparse2Big” and the assignment of the central Helmholtz Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Unit (HAICU central) to HMGU.
