Dr. rer. biol. hum. Christiane Winkler studied Nutrional Science at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena in Germany and did her PhD in Human Biology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich in Germany. From 2008 to 2010 she started as a postdoctoral fellow at Forschergruppe Diabetes e.V. at Helmholtz Munich. After her fellowship at the TEDDY Data Coordinating Center (Center for Pediatric Epidemiology at the University of South Florida, Tampa in the U.S.) in 2009, she started as a group leader at the Institute of Diabetes Research at Helmholtz Munich in 2010.
Since 2022, she leads the research area "Early diagnosis & staging of type 1 diabetes, and phenotyping”.
Christiane Winkler and her team at the Institute of Diabetes Research coordinate
- Several Birth Cohort Studies (BABYDIAB study, BABYDIET study, TEDDY study) with a prospective intensive follow-up from birth of children with an increased risk (family history and/or genetic susceptibility),
- a Puberty Cohort Study with a prospective follow-up of children with an increased risk from age 6 to 18 years (TeenDiab study),
- a Bavarian diabetes incidence cohort of children and adolescents aged 0-20 years (DiMelli study), and
- a screening study identifying the genetic risk of developing type 1 diabetes in newborns (Freder1k study).
