Infrafrontier Project (2008-2012) is an EU-funded initiative with the aim to implement a sustainably financed pan-European research infrastructure that provides capacities and open access for the systemic phenotyping, archiving and distribution of mouse models to the biomedical research community. This Infrafrontier Research Infrastructure will be composed of the National Infrafrontier Partners and the Infrafrontier Legal Entity, which will act as the European coordination unit of the infrastructure.

Infrafrontier contributes to the IEG thematic area of large-scale functional genomics, in line with the central mission of the Helmholtz Zentrum München to improve human health through a better understanding of the connection between health and environment. Research on common diseases is in the focus of the Helmholtz Zentrum München. Infrafrontier delivers important tools and knowledge to enable researchers at the HMGU in this respect. With its focus on building a sustainably funded research infrastructure of mouse resource centres, Infrafrontier Project reflects the mission of the Helmholtz Association to contribute to solving grand societal challenges using large-scale facilities and scientific infrastructure.

Infrafrontier Project is coordinated by Prof. Hrabé de Angelis, head of the Institute for Experimental Genetics. The project is based on successful European collaborations in the field of mouse phenotyping (EUMORPHIAEUMODIC) and archiving and distribution (EMMA). It is embedded in the ESFRI process (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructure), a research policy process to drive forward the development of pan-European research infrastructures in all fields of science.
