The Drukker group – the lab for human pluripotent stem cell lineage choice research

Principle investigator Dr. Micha Drukker joined the Institute for Stem Cell Research at the Helmholtz Zentrum München in June 2012. Dr. Drukker is the head of the Human Pluripotent Stem Cell Research Lab and the Human induced Pluripotent Stem Cell (hiPSC) Unit.

The Drukker lab aims to discover molecular programs governing the commitment of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) to progenitors that give rise to fetal organs.

hPSCs can differentiate into a dazzling array of cell types. That’s why we believe hPSCs will revolutionize medicine by supplying tissues for regenerative therapies. Nevertheless, the regulation of cell fate choices leading to “committed” cells is not well understood. In fact, even the lineage-committed embryonic-like progenitors that emerge directly from pluripotent cells and the underlying mechanisms of fate choices remain mostly uncharacterized. We focus our research efforts on these processes because they are the initial step in the cascade that produces to all the cell types in the body, and for harnessing them to manufacture cells and tissues for regenerative therapies.
