Helmholtz Zentrum München is a member of the Helmholtz Association. The Center consists of scientific institutes and research units.  Administrative units and  committees ensure success.


Helmholtz Zentrum München was founded on June 23, 1964 as Gesellschaft für Strahlenforschung (GSF) in the form of a limited liability company. The partners of Helmholtz Zentrum München under the Partnership Agreement of February 13, 1978 are the Federal Republic of Germany (represented by the Federal Minister for Education and Research) and the Free State of Bavaria (represented by the Bavarian State Minister of Finance).

The directors are the legal representatives of Helmholtz Zentrum München and perform their managerial duties in accordance with the Partnership Agreement and the resolutions of the Assembly of Partners and of the Supervisory Board. Together with other bodies of Helmholtz Zentrum München, the Board of Directors develops the initiatives necessary for fulfillment of the tasks of the Center in the areas of planning, coordination and controlling and ensures an effective and economically efficient use of the available funds. The directors present overarching issues to the Managing Committee, which subsequently participates in the decision making. The Board of Directors establishes a Scientific Review Committee for advice on important scientific issues.

The Finance Department is responsible for the planning, management and control function of the Helmholtz Zentrum München fiscal area.
