“For me, the next generation of biobanking is more than just a freezer and a nitrogen tank. It's a holistic approach to provide the best possible answers to researchers' questions with ELSI-compliant data and high-quality biospecimens.”

Academic career and research areas

Dr. Bettina Lorenz-Depiereux holds a degree in biology (Diploma). She received her PhD in Human Genetics from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich (LMU) in 2000. She then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Human Genetics, GSF National Research Centre for Environment and Health. In addition to her scientific work, she completed her training as a specialised human geneticist (Fachhumangenetikerin GfH) in 2012.  In 2015 she took over the molecular genetic diagnostics in the working group Endocrinology and Bone/Phosphate metabolism at the Institute of Human Genetics at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). As a scientist, she was mainly involved in the identification of disease genes of monogenic diseases, mouse models and therapeutic approaches.

In 2020 she changed her field of interest and joined the Research Unit of Molecular Epidemiology, where she worked on different aspects of ELSI (ethical, legal, and social implications) and biobanking as part of the Network University Medicine (NUM) in the context of COVID-19. Since 2023 she leads her own working group “Biobanking, Data and ELSI (BDE)”.
