IMPAC2T

The aim of the Young Investigator’s Group IMPAC²T is to investigate the effects of air pollution on human health and vegetation, taking into account the influence of climate change and the energy transition in transport.

Overview

The Young Investigator’s Group is a collaborative project between the Department of Earth System Modeling for Aeronautics, Space, Transport and Energy of the Institute of Atmospheric Physics and the working group Environmental Risks of the Institute of Epidemiology of Helmholtz Munich.

IMPAC2T aims to improve our understanding of the impact of air pollution on human health and vegetation under a changing climate and the transport energy transition. In an interdisciplinary approach, expertise in climate-chemistry modelling and epidemiology will be combined and consistent projections of climate and air quality will be carried out using a global as well as regional climate-chemistry model. As study areas, the regions of West Africa and Europe will be considered. For Germany, we will study the impact of future climate and high temperatures on the link between air pollution and cardiovascular disease.

For further information see: Research for Sustainability (FONA) – FONA

The project is lead by Dr. Mariano Mertens from the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, German Aerospace Center e.V., supported by Dr. Alexandra Schneider from the Institute of Epidemiology, Helmholtz Munich.

As a project partner we are involved in the analysis of the health effects of air pollution using data from the NAKO Gesundheitsstudie.

The FONA Initiative of the BMBF: Research for Sustainability (FONA) – FONA (funding period: 2023 - 2028).
