PHONIC

Public Health Operations for Climate Change Action – Development of a framework to identify priority operations

The aim of the PHONIC project is to develop a framework for public health measures in the context of climate change adaptation and climate protection.

Overview

PHONIC is a collaborative project of the German Alliance for Global Health Research (GLOHRA). It aims to identify and to adapt public health operations (such as communication, surveillance, workforce training) to climate change and thus make health systems more resilient to current and future challenges. An umbrella framework will be developed that allows overall classification of public health operations for climate change adaptation and mitigation. In addition, a guide with concrete indicators and good practice examples is to be developed for priority sub-areas. The use of this practical guide will then be piloted in Germany and Kenya.

Experiences will be discussed and considered in the final version of the framework. The research will be carried out in close cooperation between experts from science, politics and practice. The project is based on the best available evidence, the integration of perspectives from different disciplines, institutions and geographical contexts and will focus on equal opportunities.

WP1 - Development of an overarching framework on public health services and measures to deal with climate change through a scoping review, expert interviews and a workshop

WP2 – Development of a guide with good practice examples of priority bundles of measures through expert workshops, public consultation and additional literature search

WP3 – Piloting of the action guide in Germany and Kenya in close cooperation with national stakeholders

WP4 - Project management, knowledge translation and dissemination of the project

The PHONIC project is supported by the German Alliance for Global Health Research (GLOHRA) with funds from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Funding period is 2023-2024.

The project is led by Dr. Karin Geffert from the Institute for Medical Information Processing, Biometry, and Epidemiology of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München, Germany

Project partners are:

  • Dr. Franziska Matthies-Wiesler and Dr. Alexandra Schneider, Institute of Epidemiology, Research group “Environmental Risk”, Helmholtz Munich
  • Maike Voss, Centre for Planetary Health Policy, Berlin
