The Women@HelmholtzMunich Month aims to raise awareness for women in science and science-related positions. We reach out to all Helmholtz Munich members: Empower women to encourage a respectful togetherness!

Women@HelmholtzMunich Month between February 9th - March 8th 2023

Topics we address during this month include challenges women in science face(d) and how to overcome them, how women can be supported on their career paths and which services are offered at Helmholtz Munich to support them. We invited many inspiring women which are part of the Helmholtz Munich community and beyond and share their vision as part of webinars, film screening, digital exhibition and panel discussions during this month.

The events will start around the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11th and end on the International Women’s Day on March 8th. The month is initiated by the Scientific Talent and Career Development Team and the Helmholtz Munich STEM-Tisch.

Let’s make Women@Helmholtz Munich more visible together and celebrate women in science!

Join us for these events during the Women@HelmholtzMunich Month:

4.30-7.45 p.m. | In-person Event

The Scientific Talent and Career Development Team invites all Helmholtz Munich members to the film screening and discussion of Picture a Scientist.

About the film:

PICTURE A SCIENTIST chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights. Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we encounter scientific luminaries - including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists - who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.”

(© Picture a Scientist)

As part of the Women@HelmholtzMunich Month, this event promotes an exchange on the topic Women in Science. To encourage the exchange, the film Picture a Scientist serves as an example to show the life paths and associated hurdles of women in science. In the subsequent discussion of the film, suggestions for solutions to these hurdles are developed, presented and discussed in the plenary session.

This event is open to all Helmholtz Munich members. All genders are welcome!

9.30-11.00 a.m. | Webinar | Virtual Event | Open for External Participants

Have you ever experienced sexism in STEM? Have you ever heard comments directed at you or other people that made you feel uncomfortable or upset?
This course aims at understanding the different forms of sexism and at identifying microaggressions. Together, we will learn how to address them.

In this course, you will learn how to:

  1. Identify sexism under its different forms;
  2. Understand better why some behaviors might make you feel uncomfortable;
  3. Address sexism and microaggressions by:
  • learning how to avoid being a potential offender;
  • learning how to give feedback as a victim, a witness;
  • learning how to receive feedback if you unwillingly offended someone.

Trainer/Speaker:

Cécile Deprez is a researcher in the field of satellite-based positioning. She graduated in Geomatics in 2015 at the University of Liège, Belgium, where she also worked as a researcher from 2015 to 2019. Since 2020, she has been working at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) on the topic of next-generation satellite systems. Since 2021, she has been coordinating the women scientists’ group in her Institute, and in 2022 she co-founded a DLR-wide women scientists’ network.  Over the years, she witnessed, heard and experienced several cases of sexism and microaggressions in the workplace and started to give lectures and workshops on this topic in 2022.

1.00-3.00 p.m. | Webinar | Virtual Event | Open for External Participants

This is a course for all genders but it will specifically explore how ‘gender and gender issues’ are not only about women or non-binary people. Gender stereotypes have negative impacts on all people, on relationships (public and private), on productivity, on creativity, on the economy, on innovation, on accountability – indeed across all levels of societal interaction and human endeavours.

This session hopes to explore some of the narratives of the last 3000 years (!), to understand the power structures behind and within patriarchy. It will show us the lived experiences of women (how they differ from men) and take an intersectional approach to investigating how we can all make worthwhile contributions to greater equality between all people. This session invites men, and those not ordinarily concerned with gender issues to be part of and impact the conversation.

All participants will have a greater understanding of gender issues for all. They will also develop tools and actions to challenge inequality. Men attending the session will be able to reflect upon their relationship with gender, and gender issues as well as learn actions and tactics to support others and become allies.

The webinar provides an opportunity to share your experiences in a safe and confidential environment. It's not recorded.

Due to the nature of the topic, issues may be discussed that could be sensitive for some, particularly as gender bias and discrimination sit on a continuum, which includes gender-based violence.

The trainer:

Sharon Elliott is a Director of the Researcher Development Partnership Cambridge. Sharon passionately believes that equality, diversity and inclusion lead to better research, better research institutions, better working environments and better life experiences. She has over 25 years’ experience encouraging, supporting and leading individuals and institutions to make long-lasting, impactful change. She has delivered multi-million pound global education programmes, supported advocacy groups to affect public policy change and designed international gender mainstreaming programmes. Sharon is currently a consultant adviser to the British Council, leading the gender strategy for the Going Global Partnerships Programme.

1.00-3.00 p.m. | Webinar | Virtual Event | Open for External Participants

In this introductory overview, participants will firstly reflect upon the gender inequality that persists within academia and research - locating it within wider, global sexism and patriarchy. Participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences and learn from others while reflecting on the data and realities of gender inequalities, barriers and discrimination. We will use this understanding to consider leadership within research through a gendered lens. We will critique past and current leadership models and explore diverse, inclusive and feminist principles of leadership. Crucially, these sessions will enable you to explore how to use these principles to lead real change; personally, professionally and institutionally.

Participants in this workshop will be able to plan and shape their own leadership journey in line with the values they develop and understand throughout the session.

The webinar provides an opportunity to share your experiences in a safe and confidential environment. It's not recorded.

Due to the nature of the topic, issues may be discussed that could be sensitive for some, particularly as gender bias and discrimination sit on a continuum, which includes gender-based violence.
