Honoring Outstanding AI-based Biomedical Research: Fabian Theis Elected as ISCB Fellow

Awards & Grants, Computational Health, ICB,

The International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) annually recognizes exceptional individuals in the fields of computational biology and bioinformatics through its prestigious Fellows program. This year, Prof. Fabian Theis, Head of the Computational Health Center at Helmholtz Munich, has been elected as a Fellow. Fabian Theis is renowned for his pioneering work in applying machine learning methods to address complex biological and medical challenges, resulting in significant advancements in AI-based biomedical research. A total of fifteen nominees coming from institutions around the world have been elected to be this year's Fellows.

The ISCB is dedicated to advancing the field of computational biology on a global scale. As an international non-profit organization, it brings together members from diverse backgrounds in bioinformatics and computational biology. The ISCB serves its worldwide community and it actively shares essential information about bioinformatics resources and provides updates on relevant news from related disciplines. By advocating for resources and policies that support scientific endeavors, the ISCB aims to benefit society as a whole.

Since 2014, Fabian Theis has been a member of the ISCB, actively contributing to the field of computational biology. His scientific endeavors primarily focus on harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to unravel the mysteries of human cells. At the forefront of his research, Theis and his dedicated team at Helmholtz Munich leverage extensive datasets obtained from the DNA and RNA of individual cells to construct comprehensive models depicting cellular diversity and their intricate functions. In their pursuit of answering biological questions, they employ machine learning and deep learning techniques, effectively enabling them to make valuable predictions within the fields of biology and biomedicine.

About the ISCB Fellow program

The ISCB Fellows program was created to honor members who have distinguished themselves through outstanding contributions to the fields of computational biology and bioinformatics. Begun in 2009, 2023 marks the 14th anniversary of the program. Each year, ISCB seeks Fellows’ nominations from our members who meet the eligibility criteria for significant scientific and leadership contributions to the field of computational biology and bioinformatics.
