13th Helmholtz Diabetes Conference

The 13th Helmholtz Diabetes Conference brings together leading international scientists to discuss the latest advances in “Diabetes Across the Lifespan” — spanning early development, pregnancy, aging, and metabolic health throughout life.

The conference explores how metabolic health and diabetes evolve across different life stages, integrating insights into disease mechanisms, prevention, and therapeutic opportunities.

Internationally recognized experts and emerging researchers will present cutting-edge research in diabetes and metabolism.

This year’s Helmholtz Diabetes Lecture will be delivered by Juleen Zierath.

Stephan Herzig

is Scientific Director of the Helmholtz Diabetes Center (HDC) and the Institute for Diabetes and Cancer (IDC). His lab investigates the molecular mechanisms of diabetes and develops novel, organ-specific compounds to counteract insulin resistance, glucose tolerance and other components of the metabolic syndrome. In addition, he explores the association between cancer development and metabolic dysfunction.

Antje Körner

is Head of the Childhood Obesity and Metabolic Research Group at the Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG). Her research focusses on what drives obesity and metabolic complications in children and to apply mechanistic insights from integrated experimental, clinical-epidemiological, experimental and genetic studies for more precise risk prediction and treatment of childhood obesity and diabetes.

Raffaele Teperino

is Head of the Environmental Epigenetics Group at the Helmholtz Institute of Experimental Genetics (IEG). His lab investigates how epigenetic mechanisms regulate metabolism and contribute to obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes. In addition, he explores how environmental factors shape metabolic health across generations and develops epigenetic-based strategies to prevent and treat metabolic diseases.

Scientific Program

The program features plenary lectures by leading international experts alongside presentations by HeIDi Award nominees, highlighting outstanding early-career researchers.

Each year, two nominees are selected by a jury of plenary speakers to receive the HeIDi Award (Helmholtz Young Investigator in Diabetes Award).

Additional contributions will be selected from submitted abstracts and presented as flash talks and poster presentations.

Sessions cover key topics on diabetes across the lifespan, including brain health and prevention, obesity and metabolic risk, diabetes complications, adipose tissue biology, maternal and child health, and genetics.

Collaboration Partner: DZD (German Center for Diabetes Research)

The DZD is one of six German centers of health research. It brings together experts in the field of diabetes research and combines basic research, epidemiology and clinical applications. As our collaboration partner, the DZD is once again sponsoring the Lecture Award for the Diabetes Conference, just as in the previous years.

Helmholtz Diabetes Center

About the Helmholtz Diabetes Center (HDC)

The HDC brings together experts to prevent, treat and cure all types of diabetes.

We aim to understand the molecular bases underlying all forms of diabetes, its heterogeneity and risk factors, including obesity, as well as its complications and comorbidities. We combine world-leading basic research with clinical intervention and cohort studies to develop tomorrow’s diabetes precision medicine.
