Organizers

Stephan Herzig

Matthias Tunger Photodesign

is Scientific Director of the Helmholtz Diabetes Center (HDC) and the Institute for Diabetes and Cancer (IDC). His lab investigates the molecular mechanisms of diabetes and develops novel, organ-specific compounds to counteract insulin resistance, glucose tolerance and other components of the metabolic syndrome. In addition, he explores the association between cancer development and metabolic dysfunction.

Matthias Hebrok

© Uli Benz/ TUM

is the Director of the Center for Organoid Systems (COS) at the Technical University Munich and the Director of the Institute for Diabetes and Organoid Technology (IDOT) at Helmholtz München. His laboratory focuses on optimizing human stem cell derived pancreatic islet and beta cells for next generation cell therapies. In addition, he explores human stem cell derived pancreas organoids for the development of novel diagnostics and therapies for pancreatic cancer.

Henrik Semb

Matthias Tunger Photodesign

is Director for Translational Stem Cell Research (ITS), Helmholtz Munich, Germany. His research focuses on understanding the basic fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms of organogenesis and leads an ambitious program on human pluripotent stem cell-based cell therapy in Type 1 diabetes. He held several patents and was a co-founder of Cellartis AB, scientific advisor and board member. Henrik recently co-founded the SME Pancryos IVS.

Call for Abstracts

For the 10th anniversary of the conference, we will host three flash-talk sessions to give junior scientists a chance to present and discuss their work with experts in the field.

Stay tuned! You will soon be able to submit your abstract and get selected to give a flash talk at the conference. The two best presenters will receive a prize, sponsored by the journal Molecular Metabolism.

The 8th Helmholtz Diabetes Conference took place virtually from May 10-12, 2021, broadcasted from the Helmholtz Diabetes Center in Munich, Germany. While the conference in general aims to cover all the major topic areas in the field of diabetes, particular attention was directed to the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms involved in the development of diabetes.

The 7th Helmholtz Diabetes Conference took place September 23-25, 2019 at Palais Lenbach, Munich, Germany. While the conference in general aims to cover all the major topic areas in the field of diabetes, particular attention was directed to the metabolic connection between cancer, diabetes and other components of metabolic dysfuntions.

The 6th Helmholtz Diabetes Conference took place September 26-28, 2018 at Palais Lenbach Munich. Key topics at the 2018 conference were systemic approaches to diabetes and both genetic and epigenetic aspects of the disease, as well as the influence of fatty tissue on the metabolism. In addition, participants discussed new insights into feelings of satiety and the influence of the brain on the metabolism. Further information please find here.
