Public Engagement Knowledge Fosters Health!

How do I stay healthy? What impact do my environment and lifestyle have on my health? And how can I prevent, treat, or even cure chronic diseases like diabetes, allergies, or lung diseases?

How do I stay healthy? What impact do my environment and lifestyle have on my health? And how can I prevent, treat, or even cure chronic diseases like diabetes, allergies, or lung diseases?

At Helmholtz Munich we develop solutions for a healthier future. But research alone won’t be enough, and our knowledge must quickly reach the people who need it. This is why we aim for continuous public dialogue. With qualified information and exchange of information, we help people better understand the factors that make the difference between health and illness. The goal is to enable everybody to take responsibility for their health and deal with illness as best as possible.

Knowledge for people with health risks – such as diabetes

“Your blood sugar is slightly high.” When the doctor says this, it by no means indicates a definite case of diabetes. Our health portal diabinfo provides people with an increased risk of diabetes with all the information they need to be proactive.

Knowledge for patients – such as those with asthma

After atopic eczema and hay fever, asthma is the most common chronic illness in children. This chronic respiratory illness is not yet curable, so every asthma treatment aims to alleviate symptoms as much as possible so that patients can stay physically active.

Helmholtz Munich’s Lung Information Service and its Allergy Information Service provide all the important information about treating and living with a chronic lung disease or an allergy.

Being in the know about health – the sooner the better

The National Health Action Plan emphasises the importance of the earliest possible opportunities to promote health knowledge. Schools play an important role here. Helmholtz Munich and the German Cancer Research Center have developed scientifically sound, innovative instructional materials for the programme “Fit in Health” that aim to raise students’ awareness of health issues. They learn early on how to take responsibility for their health and prevent disease later in life.

Good information instead of fake news

Helmholtz Munich strives to provide health information of the highest quality. This is because what may sound illogical at first glance has actually been verified by a recent study: Many people are not able to properly assess health risks and implement this knowledge in their everyday lives. During the second Health Literacy Survey Germany (HLS-GER2*) in 2020 – the first year of the pandemic – nearly 60 per cent of those surveyed reported significant difficulties with understanding the complicated range of health information available. In other words, it’s not that there is too little information available, but too much, especially on the Internet and other channels. At the same time, disinformation and inaccurate information became more common on the Internet before and especially during the coronavirus pandemic.

Some people have a hard time wading through all this information. A new type of healthcare inequality is the result, with negative ramifications for unhealthy behaviour, according to the authors of the study. Low health awareness is often accompanied by an unhealthy diet, lack of mobility, and obesity. Good health information forms the basis for awareness and responsibility for one’s own health.

This is what we stand for at Helmholtz Munich, the German Research Centre for Environmental Health.
