About the Program

The Computational Health Center (CHC) at Helmholtz Munich offers talented early-career researchers exciting opportunities to advance their careers and conduct innovative research at the intersection of machine learning and health sciences. Researchers at the CHC have unique access to both experimental and clinical data.

As part of the Helmholtz Munich CHC Postdoctoral Program, several research groups provide fully funded postdoctoral positions. Applications are accepted annually.

This call seeks outstanding candidates with a doctorate in computer science, bioinformatics, computational biology, applied mathematics, or related fields. We are particularly interested in research focused on one or more of the following areas:

  • Computational oncology
  • AI drug discovery
  • Statistical genetics, single-cell genomics, virtual cell models
  • Graph-based neural networks, optimal transport
  • Biomedical imaging, deep learning, virtual reality, AI-driven image analysis
  • Agentic systems, large language models
  • Generative AI, probabilistic models
  • Representation learning, self-supervised learning, foundation models
  • Data analysis, non-linear statistics, knowledge management

Candidates selected for the CHC/Helmholtz postdoctoral program will benefit from:

  • A Fully-Funded Postdoctoral Position 
    A fixed-term, fully-funded postdoctoral position lasting two year

    Postdocs have the opportunity for conference travel, 2-3 month academic research stays, and/or industry placements in a non-academic environment, enriching experiences and broadening the professional network.

    Fellows will be considered for inclusion into the Helmholtz Munich High Potentials Program, providing additional support and training to prepare them for future leadership roles in scientific research.
     
  • Scientific Talent & Career Development
    Fellows will receive support through the Scientific Talent & Career Development Team including the Scientific Training Program as well the Career Center's coaching and training offers which include initiatives focused on entrepreneurship.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • PhD in Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Applied Mathematics, or a related field
  • An interest in interdisciplinary research
  • Applied experience with machine and deep learning methods
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in a dynamic environment
  • A strong interest in medical and biological questions is also required

After the application deadline, the selection committee will review all eligible applications. Applicants will be notified about whether they have been selected for an interview. Candidates may receive interview invitations from multiple principal investigators. All interviews will be conducted virtually.

Invitation for Interviews: mid-July
Interview Time Frame: mid-July ­- mid-August

Selected fellows will be offered a 2 year full-time contract public service including paid annual leave.
If you fulfil all the requirements, you may be eligible for a salary grade of up to E13. Social benefits are based on the Collective Wage Agreement for Public-Sector Employees (TVöD).
