Unleashing Potential: Sponsors Support Female Researchers’ Growth

On November 25, 2025, Helmholtz Munich launched the first round of the HerScienceCareer Sponsorship Program with an inspiring kickoff workshop. Guided by Nadja Tschirner, an expert in mentoring and sponsorship from Cross Consult Munich, sponsors, sponsees, and supporters came together to lay the groundwork for a year of professional growth, strategic networking, and career development for female scientists.

Why Sponsorship Matters for Female Scientists

The program has a clear goal: to make talented female scientists visible and strategically support them on their path to leadership positions. Unlike traditional mentoring, the program focuses on active sponsorship, giving talented female researchers increased visibility and access to influential networks, decision‑making bodies, and key projects. Scientific evidence shows that career advancement is shaped not only by expertise but also by access to resources and visibility—areas where sponsorship creates measurable impact.

How Sponsors Create Real Opportunities

Sponsors act as advocates and career accelerators by opening doors, offering honest feedback, and championing their sponsees even when they are not in the room. Their influence helps female scientists gain visibility, secure strategic roles, and navigate complex organizational structures.

The Role of Supporters in Strengthening Development

Supporters complement the sponsorship relationship through additional guidance, professional experience, and practical advice. Their broader perspectives enrich the program and contribute to the participants’ long‑term career growth.
