Academic Career and Research Areas

Adrian is a junior research group leader at Helmholtz Munich, where he leads the research unit “Fibrosis” within the Institute for Diabetes and Cancer (IDC). His work focuses on uncovering the fundamental mechanisms that drive fibrotic diseases across organs and biological systems.

He studied biology at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg, where he received his PhD with distinction. During his doctoral research, he investigated signaling mechanisms in mammalian cells, with a focus on scaffold proteins and their role in regulating cellular signaling networks.

Following his PhD, Adrian pursued postdoctoral research at the University of Freiburg and later at Helmholtz Munich, where he focused on identifying drug targets in fibrotic diseases affecting multiple organs, including lung, liver, kidney, and peritoneum. His work contributed to understanding extracellular matrix (ECM) dynamics and immune-driven tissue remodeling.

Since establishing his independent group at Helmholtz Munich, Adrian Fischer has shifted the conceptual framework of fibrosis research. His work demonstrates that fibrosis is not merely a local process, but a spatially organized, system-level disease driven by interactions between immune cells, stromal compartments, and extracellular matrix across different anatomical niches.

His current research integrates multi-omics approaches, spatial transcriptomics, advanced imaging, and functional in vivo models to map fibrotic processes across organs. A central goal is the development of a whole-body fibrosis atlas and high-throughput platforms to identify therapeutic targets and enable the development of innovative anti-fibrotic treatments.
