Scientific Career & Research Areas
Sandra Hummel studied nutrition sciences at the Technical University of Munich, Germany. In the first year after graduation, she worked as a dietitian in studies on metabolic changes after bariatric surgery and/or modified fasting in morbid obese patients at the Hospital Barmherzige Brüder in Munich, Germany.
Between 1999 and 2002 she worked on her PhD project at the Forschergruppe Diabetes e.V. which was awarded by the VDOE (Professional association of nutritionists in Germany). After her postdoctoral training, including fellowships in Leiden, Netherlands and Milan, Italy, and a scholarship provided by the Technical University of Munich. She received the venia legendi in 2014 and started as a group leader for "Gestational diabetes” at the Institute of Diabetes Research at Helmholtz Munich. In 2022, she became lead scientist of the research area: "Lifestyle, obesity, and epigenetic programming in type 1 and gestational diabetes" at the Institute of Diabetes Research at Helmholtz Munich.
Since 2014, she has been principal investigator in different EU-consortia such as DEDIPAC, DynaHEALTH and PREcisE, which were funded by the JPI “A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life” and by HORIZON 2020. In 2022, she became adjunct Professor at the Technical University of Munich.
Sandra Hummel enjoys sharing her expertise and is involved in a wide range of scientific and research activities:
- Member of the German national strategy by the Federal Government to promote breastfeeding
- Member of the expert committee developing Evidence-based guidelines on breastfeeding duration and interventions to promote breastfeeding (S3-AWMF)
- Member of the Pregnancy and childhood epigenetics consortium
