Academic Career and Research Areas

Marie Piraud is the Head of the AI Consultant Team for Health at Helmholtz AI, based at Helmholtz Munich, and co-lead of the Clinical AI Consultant Team at AI for Health. Those team are dedicated to empowering researchers and clinicians with tailored AI solutions, open-source software, and postgraduate training, democratizing AI for the global Health research community. They incorporate ethical and sustainability considerations all along the AI development cycle.

Marie’s academic path began with undergraduate and master’s studies in Fundamental and Quantum Physics at École Normale Supérieure de Cachan and ENS Paris. She completed her PhD in Physics (2009 - 2012) at the Laboratoire Charles Fabry, Institut d’Optique, Palaiseau, supervised by Nobel Laureate Prof. Alain Aspect and Dr. Laurent Sanchez-Palencia, studying Anderson localization of matter waves. She then held a Marie-Curie postdoctoral fellowship at LMU Munich (2013 - 2016), followed by a postdoc in Computer Science at TU Munich’s CAMP group (2016 - 2018), applying Bayesian inference and deep learning to whole-body imaging for diagnosing plasma cell disorders. From 2018 to 2020, she worked as a Senior Research Engineer in Digital Healthcare at Konica Minolta Laboratory Europe, Munich.

She joined Helmholtz AI at Helmholtz Munich in 2020, building the AI consulting team that now supports projects across cancer research, drug discovery, single-cell biology, neuroscience, and more.
