Anette-Gabriele Ziegler is Director of the Institute of Diabetes Research at Helmholtz Munich and Chair of Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes at the Technical University of Munich. At the German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD), she established the Translational Research Academy for Type 1 diabetes and serves as a coordinator. Her scientific work is driven by a singular vision: a world without type 1 diabetes. Throughout her career, she has focused on understanding how the disease develops and how it can be prevented before it manifests. Ziegler has pioneered population-based screening approaches in type 1 diabetes research, paving the way for earlier identification of individuals at risk.
The Claude Bernard Prize is one of the most prestigious international distinctions in the field of diabetes research. Awarded annually by the EASD, it honors individuals whose work has led to fundamental advances in the understanding, prevention, and treatment of diabetes, and whose scientific leadership has had a lasting global impact.
Ziegler is internationally recognized for her pioneering contributions to the early detection and prevention of type 1 diabetes. Beyond her scientific achievements, she has been a strong advocate for patients, a dedicated mentor to young researchers, and a driving force behind international collaboration in diabetes prevention.
“I am deeply honored to receive this award,” says Anette-Gabriele Ziegler. “This recognition reflects the collective efforts of many colleagues and collaborators working toward a future without type 1 diabetes.”
The award includes a monetary prize sponsored by Sanofi. Ziegler will also deliver the 58th Claude Bernard Lecture at the upcoming EASD Annual Meeting in Milan on Tuesday, 28 September 2026 at 9:00 AM, where she will present her most important scientific achievements.
