The award, which represents the highest honor of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities, recognizes particularly outstanding and publicly respected scientists from all over the world.

A Tribute to Scientific Excellence

Named in honor of Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, the 18th-century physicist, mathematician, and philosopher known for his pioneering insights and impactful contributions to scientific thought, the Lichtenberg medal celebrates excellence in scholarship and innovation.

A Pioneer in Metabolic Disease Research

Matthias Tschöp, CEO of Helmholtz Munich and Alexander von Humboldt Professor at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), is highly regarded as a pioneer in metabolic disease research. His work has significantly expanded the understanding of obesity, diabetes, and related metabolic disorders, pioneering new pathways for precision therapies and personalized prevention. Among his notable contributions is the identification and investigation of gut-brain hormone signaling mechanisms, which have laid the groundwork for innovative treatment strategies. Tschöp’s work played a key role in the development multi-receptor drugs like Tirzepatide, known for its success in addressing obesity and type 2 diabetes.

“Receiving the Lichtenberg medal is an incredible honor,” said Matthias Tschöp. “This recognition underscores the importance of collaboration and the relentless pursuit of knowledge to accelerate the development of better solutions for chronic metabolic diseases. Fast translation of basic research is the key to improve patient care and quality of life.”
