Fabian Theis Honored with ISCB Innovator Award
The International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) has awarded Prof. Fabian Theis the ISCB Innovator Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions to computational biology. This accolade is presented annually to a leading scientist who, within two decades post-degree, consistently makes significant advancements in the field and pioneers new research directions.
Advancing AI in Biomedical Research
Fabian Theis is the Head of the Computational Health Center at Helmholtz Munich and holds the Chair of Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). His research focuses on applying artificial intelligence and machine learning to decode the complexities of human cells, particularly through single-cell sequencing.
A pivotal role is played by Theis in leading international initiatives, such as the Human Cell Atlas project, which aims to create a comprehensive reference map of all human cells. Launched in 2016, this large international collaborative research seeks to map all cell types in the healthy body, across time from development to adulthood, and eventually to old age. Creating this comprehensive reference map of human cells will enhance our understanding of health and disease, driving major advances in healthcare and medicine worldwide.
Scientific Excellence Recognized
Throughout his career, Theis received numerous awards and fundings for his scientific work, including the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize (2023), the European Research Council (ERC) Advanced Grant (2022), the Hamburg Science Prize (2021), and the Erwin Schrödinger Prize (2017).
With the ISCB Innovator Award, Theis further solidifies his status as a leading figure in computational biology, shaping the future of AI-driven biomedical research.
